The Symbolism of Flowers in Thailand

For many of us that are not Thai, the flower represents a gift or a simple decoration. But in Thailand the symbolism of the flower goes further than that. Thai people benefit in many ways from the seemingly simple flower.

One of the ways in which the people of Thailand have used flowers in the past and are still using them today, is n cooking. Many of Thailand's native flowers are used in cooking as a flavour enhancer or simply for the added aroma. In fact the orchid is the provider of turmeric, which has been used in cooking for centuries. Many flowers can be eaten the moment they are picked, or some recipes and foods require the flower to be pickled first or grilled. For centuries, the flower and leaves of many of the plants and flowers in Thailand have been used to make many of the different varieties of teas, or simply as a flavouring that can be added to other beverages.

Another way in which the people of Thailand use flowers is as decorations for their temples. A predominantly Buddhist culture, the Thai population will decorate the Buddhist temples with mostly yellow or golden coloured flowers. The yellow signifies Buddha. Many times you can find a single Lotus plant and flower sitting on top of the temples pillars in a jar. The Lotus holds a special significance with the Thai population and goes by three different names, all of which have become popular names for children over the years.

There are many flower festivals that are held each year in Thailand. This is to celebrate the flower and its vibrancy that it gives to the world and all that view it. Flowers p[lay an important role in the lives of the people of Thailand and as such their homes and possessions are usually adorned with them.

The Secret to Making Delicious Indian Food

It is a good idea to surprise our families by occasionally cooking a rare Indian dish that really tastes good. But being a non-Indian, have you ever wondered why your 'Chicken Tikka Masala' or 'Goan Prawn Curry' doesn't come the way when an Indian friend makes it? The peculiar taste that makes Indian dishes truly Indian is always missing. This is because, as you would have guessed, there are always some methods and/or style that segregates cuisines in different geographies. If you try to make an Indian dish in British style it obviously will taste more British than Indian.

One secret for authentic Indian dishes, especially non-vegetarian dishes, is use of correct mix of spices like turmeric powder. But most importantly it is recommended that you buy the spices required for an Indian dish from some Indian store, as the origin of the ingredient will also play an important role in the taste of the dish itself.

For example if you are using tamarind in some dish then use of tamarind from Thailand may change the taste of the entire dish, as the Thai tamarind is sweeter than the ones found in India.

For a classic Indian chicken curry, the masala (mis of spices) used is comparatively complex to prepare. It is advisable that you buy it ready made packet from the store.

India is a country that has coconut trees everywhere. It is not a surprise that most of the south Indian curries have coconut milk or scraped coconut as the most important side ingredient. If you are planning to try a recipe that has coconut as an ingredient, try to buy a real coconut instead of the regualr coconut powder.

For best results you should always follow some culinary resource that has originally created recipes by Indians. There are various good online recipe websites that should help you.

Salad Recipes and Salad Types

A salad is one of those dishes that no-one is entirely certain what it is. In common parlance, it tends to be a mix of raw vegetables in a dressing typically made from oil and vinegar or lemon juice that's tossed and served as either a starter or an accompaniment.

However, salads can vary dramatically according to culture and in North Africa salads are often made from cooked vegetables that are then cooled and tossed with a dressing. Salads can also be made from fruit and can be served as starters, accompaniments or even desserts. The word itself derives from the French salade, standing for a mixture of cold foods, often with a dressing typically served as an appetizer or accompaniment.

Ultimately, however, the name derives from the Latin salata (salty) and refers to the Roman practice of using fish sauce (liquamen or garum) a salty decoction of putrefying fish or salty cheese to form Roman-stlye salads.

The most common form of salad is the 'green salad' which, typically, is composed of a mix of vegetables built up on a base of leaf vegetables (lettuce, rocket, spinach) often garnished with cheese such as Parmesan.

Below are two classic salad recipes:

Greek Salad

Ingredients:
50g black Kalamata olives, pitted
3 large tomatoes, diced
1 cucumber, peeled and diced
1 red pepper, de-seeded and diced
1/2 red onion, finely sliced
100ml extra virgin olive oil
150g Feta cheese, diced
1 small cos lettuce, cubed
2 tbsp dried oregano
50ml red wine vinegar
salt and freshly-ground black pepper to taste

Method:

Add all the salad vegetables together and mix then add the oregano, olive oil, red wine vinegar and season with salt and black pepper. Toss to mix and serve immediately.

Algerian Cooked Carrot Salad

Ingredients:
450g small carrots
3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
1 pinch salt
1 pinch sugar
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp cumin
juice of 1 lemon
handful of chopped parsley

Scrape the carrots then quarter lengthways. Add to a pan, cover with water and add the garlic, salt and sugar. Bring to a boil and cook for 15 minutes. Drain, refresh under cold running water then chill in the fridge (or in a bowl of iced water).

Just before serving toss the carrot pieces in the lemon juice and sprinkle with a little salt, the cayenne pepper and the cumin. Plate out and sprinkle the chopped parsley over the top. Serve immediately.

Organic Fertilizer Recipes Have All Three of These

Growing vegetable plants need plenty of nutrients in the soil. You do not want to add chemical fertilizers as you wish to avoid adding chemicals to an organic garden. Grow wonderful fruits and vegetables. Grow flowers you can't wait to show off. Grow herbs indoors can be attractive, A trio of aromatic herbs: basil, oregano and chives.

Compost is perhaps the best organic amendment. It can be purchased or made at home by recycling yard prunings and clippings. Composts may include residues of plants that were treated with pesticides containing heavy metals. Additionally, fertilizer pellets made from manure or litter may have additives that contain heavy metals or other non-allowed substances.

Gardeners will also benefit from mulching their plants because it conserves moisture and nutrients in the soil and it reduces erosion and weed growth. Gardenias will not bloom well in the shade. Researchers found dairy manure compost increased crop yields by an average of ten percent. Soil microbiology research found that the ratio of total fungal to total bacterial biomass was a strong predictor of yield.

Plants need three important nutrients in order to grow: nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous. All three of these are found in organic fertilizer recipes.

Weeds are the thorn in the side of any gardener, but they can be especially bothersome to organic gardeners. Many gardeners choose to use weed killer to get rid of weeds, but you can't do that in an organic garden. Weeds harbor harmful insects and spread disease. If it is possible, keep at least 300ft around your garden weed free.

To get the plants off to a good start, plastic mulch helps to keep the soil warm. Plants grown in organic soils are naturally more resistant to insects and disease. They are simply healthier and insects and disease generally attack plants that are already unhealthy to begin with. So always think about producing the right organic soil recipe.

Introduction to Thai Food

Thai food is by now fairly well known in many parts of the world and this is due to several reasons. Before explaining why this is so it is important to first say that the term Thai food is hard to define because there are so many varieties of Thai food to consider. This itself is due to several factors, the most important being the fact that the population of Thailand is made up of many different ethnic groups. Since all ethnic groups have food that is particular unto themselves this has given Thailand a very large base of cuisines to work with and defining a national cuisine is therefore a bit difficult.

Examples of different regional cuisines in Thailand include the deep southern dishes that have their roots in the Muslim-Malay cuisine of northern Malaysia, the far northwestern dishes that come from the Chiang Mai and Chiang areas with their hill tribe influences, the dishes of Isaan in the northeast that have Lao and Khmer roots and the many dishes in the central area of the country and in Bangkok that have numerous Chinese influences.

Thus, Thai cuisine is a true melting pot of influences, ingredients and cooking styles and this has created a national cuisine that has hundreds and hundreds of different dishes that draw on these varied roots. This is one of the reasons, as mentioned above, that Thai food is so well know around the world and so popular. There are so many different dishes and flavors associated with Thai cuisine that it always appears fresh and interesting to diners the world over. This variety undoubtedly contributes greatly to the universal appeal of Thai cuisine.

Another reason for the popularity of Thai food is the perception that it has of being healthy, at least healthier than most western cuisines. This is due mainly to the extensive use of rice and vegetables in many dishes as well as chicken and seafood. Pork is popular in many dishes too, and is also used in many decidedly unhealthy ways, such as very fatty sausages, but beef is not as prevalent. Also, many of the herbs and spices that are used have healthful qualities. So, overall, Thai food is quite healthy and with the trend towards healthier eating in the past several years this has contributed to its popularity all over the world.

A final factor, although probably the least important, is the exotic image that people have in their minds of Thailand as a country. It is certainly not well known to many Americans, in particular, or Europeans either although there are many more visitors to Thailand from Europe than from the States. This bit of mystery about the country, its culture and its people must also be a contributing factor to the increasing interest in Thai cuisine. All of these factors and more are combining to make Thai food one of the world's most well-known and popular cuisines and this is a trend that seems to keep gaining momentum as the years pass.

From Seed To Recipe

If you love to cook great tasting Asian meals you know that the best tasting meals are the ones in which you use the freshest ingredients.

It would be ideal, if fresh and healthful ingredients were just a step away from the kitchen!

Many Asian herbs and vegetables can be raised in containers that sit attractively on the porch, deck or even the windowsill.

Container gardening is a great way for cooks to raise the freshest herbs, greens, and root vegetables in a limited amount of space.

Just about any plant can be grown in a container, provided the container is large enough for the plant. Garden centers and online seed catalogs offer plants and seed packets of Asian herbs and vegetables that will not only please the cook but will be pleasing to the eye and palate, and will require minimum space and care.

In this article, we will explore an easy to grow Asian herb that can be used in many Asian recipes:

Chinese Chives

Kau tsai, Chinese chives or Garlic chives (Allium Tuberosum) are an easy to grow healthful ingredient used to flavor eggs, mushrooms, soups, fish, and lend themselves very favorably to the Asian Stir Fry.

Relatively new to the West, Chinese Chives have been used by the Chinese for centuries. References to the herb often appear in Traditional Chinese Medicine text. There is some evidence, that like garlic, Chinese Chives may help regulate hypertension and cholesterol.

Chinese Chives have a flavor that mildly resembles Garlic. They are high in vitamin A and extremely high in Vitamin C, low in calories and exhibit antibacterial properties.

They are an attractive plant, with jade green stalks and star shaped white flowers that bloom in the summer. The leaves and flowers are both edible, the flowers can be added to a salad, ground into a spice or dipped into tempura batter and deep-fried.

Easy to grow in containers, Chinese Chives will grow in just about any soil that has been prepared with organic matter, and can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Seed packets can be found at local garden centers or at many online seed companies.

Sow seeds in the spring, sow thinly and cover with light soil, keep seeds moist. Seedlings will emerge within 14 days. Chinese Chives grow slower than regular chives. Thin to 1 inch apart when seedlings are 1 to 2 inches high. Allow the plants to mature for at least 12 weeks before harvesting leaves. They are a perennial plant, which will usually go dormant in the fall, but will show new growth the next spring

A container 6 to 12 inches wide and deep would be suitable for container gardening, glazed or unglazed, terracotta or plastic it is your choice. Keep the plants moist but be careful not to over water.

Chinese Chives can be seeded directly to the garden, some people use them in borders because of their attractive display, however be warned that the plant is highly invasive.
If you don't desire the plant wandering to other parts of the yard, you must remove the flowers before they go to seed.

Planning a Dinner Party? Easy Shrimp Curry Is a Fun and Festive Entree

In my lifetime I've hosted more dinner parties than I can count. Don't get me wrong. Entertaining is fun and I love planning and preparing special meals. My husband and I love shrimp curry, but I haven't served it at many dinner parties because it is so labor-intensive.

Yet this dish is still at the top of my entertaining list because it is fun. Guests love the combination of flavors, but I think they love the participation even more. Participation leads to conversation and sharing -- the purpose of any dinner party.

Apparently shrimp curry originated in Maharashtra, India. Some recipes are made with unsweetened coconut milk. Yogurt is also used as the basis of the sauce. According to the Addicted to Curry website, so many curry recipes exist that it is impossible to count them. Indian curries are divided into Northeast Indian, Nepalese, South Indian and Shri Lankan. Bengal, Pakistan, Malaysia, Brunel, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore all have their own types of curries.

My original recipe had a chicken stock base. You could not taste the stock, but it added an undercurrent of flavor. Then I discovered a quicker recipe in "The Blue Sea Cookbook" by Sarah D. Alberson. Actually, there are several quick recipes, all made with condensed soup. Your grocery store should carry lower salt soup. Serve the curry with a choice of toppings:
* hard boiled eggs, chopped
* salted peanuts
* crumbled bacon
* fresh pineapple tidbits
* toasted coconut
* mango chutney
* chopped green onions (white and green parts)
* chow mein noodles
* halved grape tomatoes
* golden raisins
* dried apricots, cut into thin slices

Your guests will load on the toppings, so have plenty on hand. Set the mood with an Indian tablecloth, purchased from an import store, and a few serving bowls. Lighted candles will add to this mood. Here is the recipe for Easy Shrimp Curry.

Ingredients

1 pound shrimp, shelled and deveined

2 cans shrimp soup (or cream of chicken or mushroom)

1 cup sour cream (I use fat free.)

1 teaspoon curry powder or homemade garam masala

Cooked rice (Basmati is my choice because of its large grains and texture.)

Method

Cook shrimp in boiling water for 3 minutes, until it turns pink. Be careful not to over-cook the shellfish or it will become tough. Drain and cut in half width-wise or length-wise, saving some whole ones for a garnish. Heat soup (don't add any water) in a large saucepan. Add sour cream, curry powder, and shrimp. Stir gently, cover, and leave on the lowest heat, or transfer to a slow cooker, set on low. (Line the cooker with a special bag to make clean-up easy.) Serve with an array of condiments in small bowls. Complete your menu with a green salad, Indian flat bread, orange sherbet and almond cookies for dessert. Makes 4-6 servings. Note: This recipe may be doubled, tripled, or quadrupled. You may also prepare it a day ahead of time and reheat in a slow cooker.

The Healthy Salad Recipe

You don't have to be a chef to whip up a healthy and delicious salad in about 15 minutes.

Remember that the salad can be kept in the fridge for at least 24 hours and still taste great. As a matter of fact, some health nuts prefer to leave the salad in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before serving, just to let the ingredients blend.

Healthy Ingredients

This healthy salad recipe is most flexible. Experiment with your favorite vegetables, seeds and nuts. The key to a tasty salad is to create a balanced mix of colors and textures.

Here are a number of suggestions:

Red cabbage has a great texture and so does young carrots. Try grating the carrots which brings out the juice. Ripe tomatoes also add a lot of sweet juice to the dressing while olives have a rich flavor.

Red onion has a beautiful color and flavor.

If you would like a greener salad, you can add more lettuce, bean sprouts and alfalfa. Another winner is grinding half a walnut to mix with the salad dressing, for a nutty flavor.

As far as seeds go, sunflower seeds is a personal favorite. Add your favorite seeds and nuts. The sweetness of a few raisins and small cubes of apple also taste great.

So, find your favorite ingredients, rinse them carefully and cut them in mediums size pieces. Then, put the chopped veggies in a large bowl.

Avoid using too much of any ingredient to make the salad as balanced as possible.

The Healthy Salad Dressing

This is the best part of the salad. I suggest you squeeze 1 lime or half a lemon, which are both high in vitamin C. That should normally be enough juice for two servings.

Then, add about one table spoon of olive oil, which is delicious and really high in antioxidants.

Mix well and round it off with half a teaspoon of honey, if you would like a less tangy dressing.

As I mentioned before, it's possible to grind half a walnut to mix in with the salad dressing, for a delicious nutty flavor.

Next, season the dressing with a small amount of black pepper and some salt. Mix well.

It's also possible to add some of your favorite herbs. Both fresh and dried herbs taste great. I prefer rosemary, oregano and sage.

Now, pour the dressing over the salad and give it a thorough mix.

Cover the bowl with plastic film and place it in the fridge. A good alternative is to use a plastic container with a lid.

If you plan to leave the salad in the fridge for many hours, it's a good idea to mix it occasionally to keep the salad nice and fresh.

Thai Cooking and Good Health

Good health often comes from good food. If you are like I was, you simply eat what is fast and easy, stopping into the drive thru on your way to work or for a fast lunch. After work stopping off for more fast food on your way to drop the kids off at soccer or maybe swim lessons. Our days are so busy we never have the time to prepare foods for ourselves. A poor diet will make you sick. There are healthy alternatives. Some of them are also fast and simple to prepare!

I am from Thailand so my favorite foods are Thai food. There are many delicious kinds of Thai food that you can prepare very fast and have a healthy meal on the table in minutes that your family will really love.

Thai food is so healthy for you because the ingredients are so good for you. Many of the vegetables that I use I grow myself while it is summer, in the winter I buy at the local market. I am now trying to buy mostly organic vegetables since I also make my own baby food as much as possible. Some of the vegetables that are used in Thai food you will be familiar with others will be completely new to you. For instance, bamboo shoots are used in may ways for Thai food. Bamboo is used in salads, stir fried, mixed with curry and many other recipes as well. Another vegetable that I love is Thai eggplant, it is small, round, and green. Not your standard eggplant, but filled with a mellow flavor. In Thai cooking we also use many type of squash, gourds, and different types of pumpkins. Many of the recipes where I call for pumpkin you will be looking for is actually a Kabocha squash in the US and Europe. IT is also known as Japanese squash.

Thai recipes also call for a lot of herbs such as lemon grass, many types of basil, cilantro and coriander and of course Chili. Thai people eat more chili per person than any place else in the world. If you like your food hot add a little more of the Thai chili peppers. With all of the herbs that are in Thai food you will get a lot of flavor and not need to add so much salt and sugar and other flavorings that are bad for your diet. I think that this may be part of the reason that there is so few cases of things like diabetes and other diet related diseases in Thailand.

Now I offer a lot of recipes on my site and I will soon begin to post some video cooking lessons as well. So please come by and check out the recipes that I have to offer for your health and for the great taste also. Your body, your family and all of your friends will thank you when they taste the delicious foods that you can now cook!

History of the Thai Herbal Compress

For centuries the Thai people have been using dried herbs to treat many different aliments in the body. One of the best types of treatments for muscle and soft tissue pain is used in the form of a herbal compress. For centuries this ball was typically used on soldiers returning from battle to get immediate responses to inflammation from wounds and injuries. It was also used for treating soreness and pain from tired, achy muscles and joints.

Now, they are used in many forms around the world. In north America we typically see them being used for personal use as home remedies for treatment of small wounds, inflamed joints or even menstrual cramps.

For years spas in Europe and more recently in North America, have been using the power of the herbal compress to lure clients into an ancient world of the past, surrounding them with rich enticing aromas and deep moist heat that alleviate stress from everyday living.

Massage clinics have also started treating clients with the herbal compress, using them in Thai massage treatments. This is great for the removal of toxins during inflammation, improving muscle tone tension, and easing aches and pains from many conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and soft tissue injuries.

In Thailand the typical compress is created using traditional herbs commonly grown in Thailand. These herbs have both medicinal and aesthetic uses and are absorbed into the body through the skin and nose. Of course the herbs themselves can be ingested as well but when used in a compress there is no need for ingestion. All three methods allow the medicinal properties of the herbs to have profound effects in body.

A poultice is similar to the compress but is usually used as a home remedy. To make a poultice for home, one would need the herb or substance of choice, say oatmeal, place it on a square of material, wrap it up, heat it, and place it on the area for relief. Some poultices can be used for extended periods, for example the Castor oil wrap. These types of wraps can be left on over night and kept in the fridge or freezer for future use.

4 Essential Ingredients You Must Have If You Sweat Too Much

If you sweat too much you are not alone. Millions of people suffer from excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis as it is known medically.

For many people it makes them feel very self conscious and embarrassed especially when socialising. Others often, very unfairly, judge people who sweat excessively or have strong body odor as being un-hygienic - this only adds to the problem.

The good news is that you can control it with natural products. Just make sure you have these 4 items in your kitchen cupboard and begin to dry out!

1. Apple Vinegar

This is a great product for treating feet and stopping armpit sweat. The acid in the vinegar will neutralize body odor and has a drying effect on the skin which inhibits sweating. Not only that when used on the feet it also keeps toe and foot fungus at bay. A simple recipe to treat feet is:

Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with a quart of very warm water

Soak feet for 25 minutes

Dry feet well, especially between the toes

2. Baking Soda

Another great product for feet and armpits, but can also be used on hands. Baking soda is an alkaline and sweat is an acid so when they are mixed together they form a gas which evaporates the sweat. Baking soda conditions the skin to sweat less and eliminates odors. A simple recipe to stop underarm sweat is:

Mix baking soda with water to form a paste

Apply to armpits and leave for 25 minutes

Rinse off with water

3. Witch Hazel Liquid

This is fantastic for your face. The bark and leaves are extracted to form a powerful natural astringent which dries your skin. It also has anti inflammatory properties so can reduce redness and reduce the appearance of pores. It is very mild on your skin, but remember everybody is different and you should patch test for irritation before applying.

4. Cypress Oil

If you have sweaty hands you must buy some cypress oil. It is so embarrassing meeting new people and the dreaded handshake when you know your palms are sweaty. Cypress oil is calming and cooling, so not only will it stimulate calm emotions the alcohol in it will help dry your hands instantly.

Try these four products and you will see a great improvement.

For instance, in just a couple of days I was able to obtain an abundance of information on almost all of the popular Thai foods recipes, books, articles and ebooks available.

To further my search I also used Google to find the access to relative forums and blog sites, appertaining to my search on Thai foods recipes. You may well find the information you want immediately but if you can't then post a comment asking maybe for details of a particular recipe, book, ebook or whatever. In a couple of days you may well have a positive reply.

Some of the information I received was free but as you would expect, the paid Thai foods recipes books and ebooks tended to be of better quality with a far greater range of Thai foods recipes.

You must remember not to copy any content of, foods recipes or images without first getting permission. If in doubt contact the source of the information and the owner will normally be only too pleased to share the details with you.

Thailand, the subject of a recent survey showed very few people could even locate Thailand on a map! Plus the fact that many confused Thai food with Chinese cuisine.

For the record, Thailand is located in South East Asia and there is little comparison between Chinese and Thai foods recipes they each have their own uniqueness! Similarly, you would find little comparison with Japanese and Korean foods recipes either.

Thailand's climate plays a big role in its cuisine, but the indomitable spirit of the Thai people plays an even bigger role. Everywhere you go in Thailand there are wonderful foods recipes prepared with fresh ingredients. But finding delicious foods recipes, locating unique spices and ingredients and learning Thai cooking techniques discourage many cooks from even trying to replicate what is available in Thailand.

Maybe some of the Thai foods recipes possibly may not be practical for someone just learning how to cook these traditional delicacies. But for the information needed, as already mentioned, it is well worth the price of investing in good popular books or ebooks. There are always many superb foods recipes for someone who really wants to taste marvelous Thai foods recipes or even just to use these books or ebooks to experiment with.

However by learning the secrets of the art of Thai cooking while of course enjoying delicious Thai foods recipes then your preparations can be as good as anything found in Thailand. Even in this high tech day and age the public library is still a very good source of information.

Another fascinating aspect about Thai cooking is fruit and vegetable carving, they are very skilled at it but with practice I am sure it is not beyond the average person to produce an acceptable attempt at the art.

There is no better way to understand Thai cuisine than to actually visit Thailand. For instance they celebrate their New Year, "Songkran" over three days, usually in mid April. If you're thinking of going to Thailand during their New Year festivities however, be prepared to get wet. But rest assured the rain will not affect the hospitality of the local people, they are so friendly and their hospitality is unbelievable. I can tell you this from personal experience.

A lot of English is spoken in Thailand and you will not find it difficult to get unlimited tips to "take away" with you on Thai foods recipes.

Many of my personal favourite Thai foods recipes don't include meat. If you've ever seen the meat sellers in the local markets in Thailand, you would probably understand why I prefer mostly vegetarian dishes when I visit! This is a personal thing of course; I have many friends who swear by the local Thai meat dishes. Really though, I think that sometimes the heaviness of the meat tang can cover the other subtle flavours in some Thai dishes and who wants that?

Thai's Foods Recipes Cuisine as a culture can be seen through the window of one's kitchen.

I very much hope you too will join the growing ranks of the "Thai foods appreciation movement" worldwide!
